1) Great camera for a great price! - Bought this camera for a vacation that included a road trip, parties, and a trip to a beautiful national park.

The camera performed amazing in every situation. I took tremendous pictures of wildlife, scenery, closeups, portraits, selfies, and campfire photos. It takes a while to get used to the settings, how to use them, and what situations they work best in. There has to be an easier way to switch between the settings than this camera has. Once I got to the setting I wanted, the camera performed extremely well. Three of the main reasons I went with this camera and not for another “bulky” camera is because of the size, zoom, and the price. This camera is small enough to easily fit in a man's jeans or athletic shorts pocket. Even so, the zoom on this pocket-size camera is phenomenal. I was able to get a clear picture of wildlife and landscapes that I was spotting with binoculars. The panorama is also great. Even though you seemingly have to take the full panorama even if you just wanted half of it, it is easy to crop the photo right on the camera or on a computer.

I have not used all of the functions or used them extensively but this camera took great photos. So I would definitely recommend it to everyone!

2) First I read all the bad reviews just to see what problems there was - First I read all the bad reviews just to see what problems there was. Took a gamble anyway after reading all the bad reviews. As it turned out, the camera came with a manual in English, USA power supply (120-volt charger w/USB cable). It came with one Nikon Lithium Ion Battery EN-EL 19. Selling at Amazon for $67+ after shipping came out to $72+. There was a lot of complaint about the camera not focusing. So that’s the first thing I did after inserting the battery. So far this camera is operating normal and pictures are focused. Worried the camera would have a defect, none at the moment. They offered a two years warranty for $8.47 extra; I declined. Don’t know if it’s luck or good karma, but this camera appears to be in perfect operating condition. The camera didn’t come with a memory card, but just to let you know, that’s standard policy when buying any digital camera, they’re not suppose to come with memory cards. Even when you buy a $500+ digital camera; I bought a Nikon Coolpix P7000 no memory card. My brother bought a $4000+ Canon EOS mark III no memory card either. What's astonishing was to read all the bad reviews and yet I received mine in perfect condition. I’ll try to post some photos so everybody can see what my photographs look like.

1) Great value for the money - I purchased this camera from Target during the black friday sale. I was quite impressed being that I was coming off a typical point and shoot camera from Nikon. Coming from where I stand Ineed a camera that takes better still photos. im tired of the blurry shots I was getting from my old camera. It is true if you are taking pictures of something moving it will come out blurry...but there is a sports mode that takes clear shots of moving objects. Most camera's need alittle play time to get used to and reading the directions is helpful but straight out of the box this thing is self explainatory. I will give it 4 stars for the price I paid 99.99 and the fact that its a step up from my old and the zoom is unbelievable. And less the 5th star because the blurry thing. I'll have to remember to put it in that mode if the person or thing im shooting is moving. I did not want to spend 200 or more on a camera to get good shots for the holidays.

2) Hold on before you return it. . . . - I picked this up at Target on 12/24/11 ($99). I'm still shopping for a better (and more expensive) camera, but the 15X zoom on this caught my attention. I figured if the negative reviews were true I could still use it as a birding camera and just keep it in the car.

I took about 100 shots last night in and outdoors, and another 100 today (in and out, sunny). I'll admit I was ready to take it back after the first 50 because the auto settings produced too much blur. Then I read the ENTIRE manual and tried some settings other than the defaults. Based on my limited tests, here are some adjustments that will make you feel much better about the camera:

*ISO is manually adjustable all the way up to 6400. I'm getting decent low-light indoor shots at 800 without excessive noise.

*Use the "slow sync" flash mode. It illuminates with less glare in some situations but still provides enough light to freeze the action.

*There are TWO types of Vibration Reduction (VR). The normal mode works very well with the zoom at full extension and is the VR that's automatically set for most of the shooting modes. But there is a 'hybrid' VR setting that snaps the shutter twice (at ISOs of 200 and below) and compares the images. Processing time and saving is a bit longer but I was able to take indoor pictures (without flash) of my dogs moving around and get clear images.

*The "exposure compensation" control appears to adjust the shutter speed within a limited range depending on the initial shooting mode that's selected. If the flash is washing out your shots this control can damp that down some.

*Try to pre-focus on 'sports' shots by holding the shutter halfway down on the spot where you anticipate capturing the movement. Finish the shot when the subject is in the center of the frame. It's tricky but can yield some surprisingly good results.

Notes: The f/stop setting is controlled by the level of zoom magnification. (I haven't found a way to override that setting.) All of the settings are displayed on the LCD when you push the shutter button halfway down so it's pretty easy to keep track of what works best - I'm generally setting the ISO higher and exposure compensation lower than the defaults suggest. And, the performance of the zoom at full magnification with VR is really quite impressive.

Bottom line: This is a pretty decent camera and IMHO worth the price, if not more, for the Nikkor lens alone. You do need to spend a little time getting acquainted but the results are worth the effort.

1) Surprisingly Good For The Price - I have taken more photos since writing the initial review and am even more impressed with this little camera now than I was then. I am amazed how clear and sharp the photos are right out of the camera.

I can't do as much with this camera as I can with my Canon 60d DSLR. The latter has much better zoom capability, is much better for action shots, etc., but it costs many times more than this one so you would expect it to do more. However, for the typical family shots and street photography, this camera is a much closer second place to the 60d than I realized when I wrote the first review.

And the fact that you can carry it in your pocket, always ready for use, is a huge plus. I now find myself using this camera for family activities much more than I do the 60d.

My present primary camera is a DSLR Canon 60d. However, with its lenses, it is much too large and heavy to carry wherever I go when I am out and about. I wanted a small camera I could carry in my pocket, one that took very good photos and did not break the bank. The Coolpix S3500 fills that need very nicely.

Compared to my Canon 60d. which cost many times more what I paid for the S3500, it is a 2 or a 3. But considering what you get for your money, the S3500 is a strong 5.

The photos are clear and sharp, the colors (I have it set in "standard") are very natural appearing, and it handles "noise" up to ISO 1600 about as well as any camera.

At ISO 100 & 200 there is negligible noise and an increasing amount thereafter. But even at 1600 the noise removal software I use cleans up the photo as easily as it does my Canon 60d. Quite surprising for a camera of this price.

This camera has just about anything anyone could want for casual photography. And it takes good photos.

One thing I especially like is that it uses standard SD cards. I'm using an 8GB card so that I will have space if I want to shoot some video. The greater capacity of the card, the more photos and video clips it will hold.

Also, both surprising and welcome, is the 7X optical zoom. Typically cameras of this type, even more expensive ones, have an optical zoom of only 4X or 5X.

(Note: This camera, like virtually all others, has both optical zoom capability and an option of digital zoom. My advice is to make use of the optical zoom of 7X and turn off the digital zoom since all that does is to crop the photo to make the subject look larger. With the optical zoom you can actuallyincrease the size of whatever you are shooting.)

A Quick Start guide comes with the camera. Don't be fooled by the thickness of the book, there are only a few pages in English.h The rest of the book is repeating the same basic information in 3 other languages.

2 DVD's come with camera. One, and the most important to me, was the user manual. It too includes 4 languages, but you can download and save the language portion that you want. It is well done and I recommend using it when you set up the camera rather than the very basic quick start guide. Don't install everything on your computer, just the portion in the language of your choice.

The second DVD gives you tools for processing, printing, and uploading to Facebook your photos. I didn't install it because I have other software that I use.

Also in the box are a hand strap, battery, and charging device, there is no SD card, but the camera does have 25MB of internal memory that will allow you to take a few photos while you get an SD card, and no case. You charge the battery when it is in the camera using the cable.

If you are looking for a small, relatively inexpensive camera for family photos and other casual shooting, this camera deserves very serious consideration. I'm glad I chose it even though I thought I would never own any brand except Canon.

2) Exceeds expectations - The camera exceeded my expectations. I actually was able to take pictures of people moving without the picture coming out blurry. Also the quality of the picture is so beautiful.
